Hannah Abbott (born 1980) is a Hufflepuff student in the same year at Hogwarts as Harry. She is described as being blonde with a rosy complexion who usually wears her hair in pigtails. In her fifth year at Hogwarts she became a Hufflepuff prefect along with her close friend Ernie Macmillan. Hannah is also an avid collector of chocolate frog cards.
Hannah is initially introduced in book one when she becomes the first member of Harry’s class to be sorted into a house. In book two she stood up for Harry. When Ernie Macmillan suggests that Harry was the heir of Slytherin she responded that he “always seemed so nice”. A year later she suspects that Sirius Black was able to hide so well because he could disguise himself as a shrub. In book four she wears a “Support Cedric Diggory” badge which shows her house loyalty but she also remains on good terms with Harry which shows her school loyalty. In book five she is mentioned to be so distraught over upcoming O.W.L. exams that she has an emotional breakdown in Herbology class and is given a calming draught by Madam Pomfrey. It turns out that her worrying was not unreasonable; during her practical Transfiguration exam she turned her ferret into a flock of flamingos rather than vanishing it.
In the fall of 1995 (her fifth year) she joined Dumbledore’s Army, a group set up by Harry to make up for the lack of Defense Against the Dark Arts material being taught when Hogwarts was controlled by Professor Umbridge. About a year later she received news in Herbology class that her mother, whose lineage is still unclear, had been found dead.
After the events of Deathly Hallows, she married Neville Longbottom.
