New Zealand Herald profiles Daniel Radcliffe New Zealand Herald profiles Daniel Radcliffe

090701 Radcliffe profileThe New Zealand Herald has published a lengthy feature on Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter).  In the piece – “Harry Potter – still working his magic” – Radcliffe discusses his hopes for the final two films; why he is glad the seventh book is being made into two films; and what it’s like working with Michael Gambon (Professor Dumbledore), among other things.

“I’m very happy that the seventh book is being made as two films,” notes Radcliffe, “because I was worried they would have to cut important scenes. For example in the fourth film you could cut out the house elf sub-plot and it doesn’t affect the main story in any way. In the second film they cut out the Nearly Headless Nick Death Day Party. In fact that whole character has fallen by the wayside. The problem with doing that with the final book is that there is nothing that doesn’t relate to the main story or drive it forward. There’s not much you could cut. So we’ve given ourselves the room and opportunity to do it justice.”

090701 Ron LAThe LA Times’ countdown to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince continues today with a new feature piece on Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films). In the piece, Grint reflects on the Potter movies coming to an end in 2011.

“I was thinking about what it’s going to be like when we’re done, after the last movie,” Grint said. “It is going to be really weird, actually. At the moment it seems quite far away. I don’t know what I’m going to do, really. I’m going to miss it, I think, because it’s been my whole life for a long time. I really enjoy it as well, every year we’ve come back and done it. All of this, this is what I know…”

“I think it’s going to be sad when this, all of it, when it’s all over. Reading the last book, there was so much talk about who was going to die. So I was half-expecting, I mean, me, Dan and Emma to not survive. Or our characters, I mean. I was pleasantly surprised, though. I’m glad that it ended the way it did. We all make it.”

James and Oliver PhelpsIn yet another feature piece in the LA Times, James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley in the Harry Potter films) speak about working on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, director David Yates, and bringing the Weasley twins to life.

Both James and Oliver agreed that the joke shop scenes were their favourite to film in Half-Blood Prince, noting that, “The crew built an exquisite set, and there are a lot of special effects involved to simulate the magical pops and explosions. It’s a great scene. ”

The twins also debunked the belief that they are often mistaken for one another.

MG: Are you often confused for each other like the Weasley twins are in the movie?

OP: It’s funny that you should ask that, because we rarely are. When we first went in for casting calls and got the part, the crew was very methodical. They said to me “You’re George,” and to James, “You’re Fred” and I guess it stuck because no one ever really got confused.

JP: What substance did you actually use for the memories?

SC: It was a computer-generated, CG effect, as many of these things are. These movies have been done for nine years now. When we began, there was much more done physically — and it’s amazing when you look back on the progress of digital effects in the last nine years.

‘Harry Potter’ costume designer on dressing Slughorn ‘Harry Potter’ costume designer on dressing Slughorn

slughornHarry Potter costume designer Jany Temime discusses the challenges involved in dressing Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in a new interview with the LA Times.

“Everything we did for his costumes was very rich, but also very used, because he’s not a rich man anymore. He hasn’t worked for a long time. He is a bit of a has-been. But his clothes, even if they were from 20 years ago, were once upon a time, very rich and very glamorous. So we went for ‘Old Glamour’ when designing…Very pompous, very extreme, very glorious.”

Mark Williams on Arthur Weasley, ‘Potter’ series and more Mark Williams on Arthur Weasley, ‘Potter’ series and more

markwilliamsMark Williams was interested in narrating the Harry Potter audiobooks before being cast as Arthur Weasley, according to a new interview in the LA Times. Williams also speaks about the fandom, being a father figure in the series, and the now grown up trio.

For Harry Potter, did you read any of the novels before you were cast?
Yeah! I read them before I was cast and was, kind of embarrassingly, a fan, a bit. I found my agent and said ‘Is anybody gonna read these as talking books because I’d like to put my name up for it.’ I knew who Arthur Weasley was, and I know who I am and I knew I could do it.

New interview with Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown) New interview with Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown)

caveThe HeroComplex Blog in the LA Times has featured a new interview with Jessie Cave, who plays Lavender Brown in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Jessie specifically discusses “the big kissing scene” in detail, explaining that Rupert was scared, she was nervous, and all those nerves collectively made for the perfect kissing scene – as well as for some major laughs after filming. A cool excerpt from the interview:

How is Lavender introduced?
She’s in the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes shop and she’s kind of ogling Ron. She’s been going to school with them for years, but it’s not that she’s making her interests known.
