The entrance to St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is located outside a large, old-fashioned, red brick department store called Purge and Dowse Ltd. The place itself had a shabby, miserable air; the window displays consisted of a few chipped dummies with their wigs askew, standing at random and modelling fashions at least ten years out of date. Large signs on all the dusty doors read ‘CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT’. To enter, you stand close to the glass and tell the dummy standing in the window display and state your business. Once the Dummy has approved your visit, she will point and you should then step through the glass and you’ll vanish.
First Floor Creature-Induced Injuries
Bites, stings, burns, embedded spiders, etc.
When Mr. Weasley is bitten by the snake in the Order of the Phoenix, he is held in “Dangerous” Dai Lleywellyn Ward: Serious Bites. This ward has one window that is opposite of the door and is fairly small and rather dirty. Light comes from shining crystal bubbles clustered in the middle of the ceiling.
The staff in this ward includes Hippocrates Smethwyck (Healer-in-Charge) and Augustus Pye (Trainee Healer). Pye is interested in complementary medicine and attempts to help Arthur by using stitches on his wounds. Arthur was very interested in the Muggle way of healing; therefore he made no attempts to stop Pye. Mrs. Weasley was furious when she found out about the stitches. There are two other patients in the ward during this visit. One is a wizard who has been bitten by werewolf (who Lupin talks to during the Christmas visit), and the other is a witch who won’t reveal what she was handling when she sustained her injuries.
Second Floor: Magical Bugs
Contagious maladies, e.g., dragon pox, vanishing sickness, scrofungulus.
Third Floor: Potion/Plant Poisoning
Rashes, regurgitation, uncontrollable giggling, etc.
Fourth Floor: Spell Damage
Unliftable jinxes, hexes, and incorrectly applied charms, etc.
Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny visit this floor on their way to the tearoom on Christmas day. As they climb the stairs, they encounter Gilderoy Lockhart on the landing and accompany him to the Janus Thickey Ward (aka ward 49), where he is staying due to a memory charm backfiring when he attempted to use it on Harry. This is the long-term resident ward. Other inhabitants of this ward include Frank and Alice Longbottom, Broderick Bode, and a witch named Agnes. During this visit, the foursome meet Neville and his grandmother and learn the truth about Neville’s parents which were tortured into insanity by Lord Voldemort’s followers.
Fifth Floor: Visitor Tearoom/Shop
A place to relax, similar to the waiting room at Muggle hospitals.
